Malaysia has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening relations with Bahrain through deeper cooperation in political, economic, cultural, and people-to-people spheres.
In a statement, the Embassy of Malaysia in Manama said the two countries are bolstering ties through high-level engagements and a growing economic partnership.
In 2024, bilateral trade reached US$260 million (RM1.09 billion), comprising US$54.8 million in Malaysian exports and US$205.6 million in imports from Bahrain, reflecting the steady growth of the partnership.
“This growth reflects the strong and mutually beneficial economic cooperation that both nations continue to nurture.
“Looking ahead, the Embassy of Malaysia in Manama remains committed to fostering stronger ties between Malaysia and Bahrain,” the embassy said in a statement issued in conjunction with Malaysia’s National Day Reception in Bahrain.
The reception was graced by Bahrain’s Transportation and Telecommunications Minister Dr Shaikh Abdulla Ahmed Al Khalifa as guest of honour, and attended by Member of Parliament and Second Deputy Speaker of the Council of Representatives Ahmed Abdulwaheb Qarata, along with the Undersecretary for Political Affairs at Bahrain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Khaled Yousef Al-Jalahma.
On high-level engagements, the embassy said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s official visit to Bahrain in February marked a historic milestone. The trip underscored collaboration in Islamic fintech, education, and emerging sectors such as semiconductors, cryptocurrency, and digital innovation.
Reflecting on the dynamic ties between the two nations, the embassy said Bahrain's Crown Prince and Prime Minister Salman Hamad Al Khalifa paid an official visit to Malaysia in May for the Asean-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit and the Asean-GCC-China Summits.
During the visit, several memoranda of understanding (MOUs) and agreements were signed to enhance cooperation in political consultation, human resource management, industrial development, trade, academic collaboration, and technology.
Malaysia and Bahrain celebrated the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations in November 2024.
Malaysia opened its embassy in Manama in 2003, followed by the opening of the Bahraini Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, and the establishment of the High Joint Committee Meeting for Bilateral Cooperation in 2017.
