Cambodia and Malaysia are looking to deepen energy cooperation following high-level talks between Petronas LNG and Royal Group’s Botum Sakor on Tuesday, with discussions centred on potential joint investment ventures and LNG imports to strengthen bilateral economic ties.
During the meeting, the Chief Executive Officer of Petronas LNG extended an invitation to Kith Meng, Chairman and CEO of Royal Group of Companies, to visit Malaysia to gain first-hand insight into Petronas’ advanced LNG system and operations.
Petronas is recognised as one of the world’s largest producers and suppliers of liquefied natural gas, with an extensive global footprint spanning Malaysia, Australia, Canada, the United States, Japan and Korea.
Royal Group Botum Sakor, a subsidiary of Royal Group, is currently spearheading the development of the landmark 900MW Botum Sakor LNG project in Koh Kong province, designed to meet Cambodia’s growing demand for reliable energy.
The meeting also highlighted Royal Group’s significant investments in Cambodia’s energy sector. In 2024, the parent company launched a $1.34 billion natural gas-fired LNG plant through its subsidiary Botum Sakor LNG. The project, consisting of two units of 450MW each, represents the largest and most recently announced power generation initiative in the country.
Officials noted that enhanced collaboration with Petronas could accelerate Cambodia’s ambitions to diversify its energy sources and secure long-term energy security. Industry observers say that such partnerships not only pave the way for knowledge transfer and technology sharing but also position Cambodia to attract further investment in clean and efficient energy solutions.
Both sides expressed optimism that ongoing dialogue would lay the groundwork for a stronger energy partnership, benefitting not only Cambodia and Malaysia but also contributing to regional energy stability.
