Indonesia is seeking to boost bilateral trade with Cambodia - particularly by increasing imports of Cambodian goods - while stressing the need to improve connectivity, logistics and cooperation in energy and defense.
Indonesia is seeking to strengthen bilateral trade with Cambodia, primarily by increasing the import of Cambodian goods to Indonesia, with the Indonesian Ambassador to Cambodia emphasising the importance of enhancing connectivity and logistics between the two nations.
In an interview with the media at the celebration of Indonesia's 80th anniversary of Independence Day, Santo Darmosumarto, Indonesian Ambassador to Cambodia, said that the relationship between the two nations is positive, but there is still much room for both countries to grow in the future.
He said that both nations need to further strengthen and expand their trade and investment, particularly in expanding their potential in energy and defense cooperation.
“We always hope to improve and expand the import of both nations, especially the import of Cambodian goods to Indonesia,” he said. “In order to promote Cambodian products to Indonesians, we consistently work closely with the Cambodian ambassador in Jakarta.”
However, Darmosumarto stressed the need to further enhance connectivity and logistics between Cambodia and Indonesia. “It is to ensure that our trade is better, especially in transportation,” he said.
In the first seven months of 2025, Cambodia exported over $41.8 million worth of goods to Indonesia and imported roughly $562.7 million worth of goods, according to a report by the General Department of Customs and Excise. This resulted in $604.5 million of bilateral trade between the two countries, a nine percent decrease year-on-year.
On August 17, the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh commemorated Indonesia's 80th Independence Day, with about 400 Indonesians in attendance.
Darmosumarto said, “As part of the Indonesian diaspora, we realise the spirit of independence through concrete actions, hard work and, most importantly, maintaining our unity wherever we are."
According to the Indonesian Embassy, the Indonesian community in Cambodia has grown rapidly, amounting to more than 131,000 Indonesians in 2024. The surge of Indonesians living in Cambodia has also been coupled with intensifying economic partnerships, especially in trade and investment.
Darmosumarto encouraged the Indonesian community to strengthen ties with local Cambodian hosts as well as contribute positively towards the growth of bilateral cooperation.
