Asean members review progress of economic work plans

Senior economic officials from 10 Asean member countries, the Asean Secretariat and four negotiating partnerships met in Vientiane this week to review the progress of the implementation of economic activities.

The Second Meeting of the Asean Senior Economic Officials for the Fiftieth Asean Economic Minister Meeting is being held from April 4-7 under the chairmanship of the Director General of the Trade Negotiations Department, Thai Ministry of Commerce, Ms Auramon Supthaweethum.

The Lao delegation is led by Mr Xaysana Xayakone,  Director General of the Foreign Trade Policy Department, Ministry of Industry and Commerce of Laos.

Asean senior economic officials were updated on the progress of the implementation of economic activities. They also heard about the priority work plans with Thailand as the chair for Asean 2019 and the theme for the year being “Advancing Partnership for Sustainability”. The theme has been chosen for Asean economic ministers to consider and adopt by the end of this month.

The priority work plan will prepare for the fourth industry revolution which includes the introduction of innovative practices and capacity building of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, increasing connectivity within Asean and making the region sustainable.

They will also address issues such as the customs notification system within Asean’s single window system and approval of vehicle standards.

Participants will hear and discuss ways to cooperate within the framework of Asean-China, Asean-Republic of Korea, Asean-Japan, Asean Plus Three, and Asean-America, to promote trade and investment.
