JOHOR BARU: British companies and investors are urged to look at countries in the region to export their products to and invest in, as they offer good growth prospects and business opportunities.

British High Commissioner to Malaysia Vicki Treadell said Malaysia, due to its strategic location, could be a base to penetrate the Asean market, which is home to 650 million people.

“Asean is the third largest economy in the world and soon to overtake Europe,’’ she said at the opening of British-based chemicals company Synthomer's RM270mil nitrile latex expansion at its facility in Pasir Gudang.

Also present at the event were Synthomer chief executive officer Calum Maclean and executive vice-president (Asia) Derick Whyte.

“We need to engage with the world, as we depart the European Union,’’ she said.

Treadell added British companies in Malaysia were committed to growing together and contributing to the economic well-being of the country, due to the historical and long-standing relationship between both countries.

Treadell said there was a group of 24 top British companies in the country under the British High Commission Premier Club in Malaysia and these companies have employed some 43,000 Malaysians.

“They have created some 70,000 jobs opportunities under the supply chain and have helped the local SMEs to grow along the way,’’ she added.

Treadell said British companies in Malaysia export products and services to all over the world worth RM2.04bil with trade between the United Kingdom and Malaysia at RM25.14bil.

“We should double the amount and we must work together with our Malaysian partners, and government agencies promoting trade and private sector,’’ she said.
