Thailand seeing cheaper tuna amid US, China trade fight

26 tháng 07. 2018

Thailand is seeing an increase in tuna raw material imports from China as exports that would normally go to the US are being 'dumped' in Thailand amid new US tariffs, the Bangkok Post reported.

The Thai Tuna Industry Association (TTIA) said that Chinese tuna imports could rise by 5% to 750,000 to 800,000 metric tons as Chinese prices drop from $2,300/t to a projected range of $1,000/t to $1,500/t.

The trade war is also directly affecting Thailand's plans to expand the value of its own tuna exports from THB 80.5 billion ($2,4bn) in 2017 to THB 90bn in 2018.

"The TTIA forecasts that Thailand's canned tuna exports are unlikely to hit the target because of increasing tuna stocks, while the sector has to manage currency fluctuations stemming from the current trade war," TTIA president Chanintr Chalisarapong said.
