Japan Views TPP-11, RCEP As Important Regional Cooperation Mechanisms

15 tháng 06. 2018

The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)-11 deal and Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) are among the important regional cooperation mechanisms, said Japanese Ambassador to Malaysia, Dr Makio Miyagawa.

He said the TPP had already been signed by the 11 member nations, including Malaysia.

“I’m not sure when Malaysia will ratify the TPP-11, but I still have high hopes that these regional trade and investment liberalisation mechanisms will have a good future,” he told reporters after a 30-minute meeting with the Council of Eminent Persons (CEP) Chairman, Tun Daim Zainuddin at Ilham Tower here today.

However, Miyagawa was mum on whether any trade deals would be signed between the two countries during Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s visit to Japan next week.

“It is a little too early to tell, as Dr Mahathir is very busy,” he said.

Mahathir will be heading to Japan on Sunday, where he will also be speaking at the 24th International Conference on the Future of Asia on June 11-12.

On his meeting with the CEP, Miyagawa revealed that defence, education, investment and trade culture were among the issues discussed.

Today marks Miyagawa’s third meeting with the CEP from last week.
