Sweden has expressed strong support for the swift establishment of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the European Union (EU) and Malaysia. This endorsement aligns with Sweden’s active participation in EU trade negotiations, as the country does not independently conclude FTAs but collaborates within the EU framework.
Negotiations for an EU-Malaysia FTA were initially launched in 2010 but were put on hold in 2012 after seven rounds. In 2023, both parties began a stocktaking exercise to reassess their positions regarding a possible resumption of negotiations. On January 20, 2025, the EU and Malaysia announced the resumption of negotiations for a comprehensive and modern FTA.
Sweden’s support for this FTA is rooted in its longstanding trade relationship with Malaysia, which has been one of Sweden’s most important trading partners in Southeast Asia. The stable business climate in Malaysia and its strategic location make it an attractive destination for Swedish companies aiming to expand in the region.
The Ambassador of Sweden to Malaysia has publicly reiterated Sweden’s full support for a swift EU-Malaysia FTA, especially in times of increased protectionism.
The successful conclusion of this FTA is anticipated to further strengthen trade and economic cooperation between the EU and Malaysia, benefiting businesses and consumers on both sides
