The leaders of Vietnam and Brunei have praised the positive development of the Comprehensive Partnership between the two countries and agreed to further deepen bilateral ties, bringing benefits to their people and contributing to building a strong, resilient, and sustainable ASEAN Community.

Meeting on the sidelines of the 2024 APEC Leaders’ Week in Lima, Peru, on November 14 (local time), Vietnamese President Luong Cuong and Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah also agreed that both countries would further promote high-level exchanges and interactions across all levels, maintain effective implementation of bilateral cooperation mechanisms, and effectively carry out the Action Program for the Vietnam-Brunei Comprehensive Partnership for 2023-2027.

They emphasized strengthening cooperation across all areas, particularly the four priority sectors agreed upon by both countries’ leaders, namely oil and gas, chemicals, Halal food processing, and tourism and people-to-people exchanges.

Cuong affirmed that Vietnam will always facilitate Brunei’s businesses in expanding their investments and operations in the country. He requested Brunei's support for Vietnamese companies in production processes and certification for agricultural products and Halal goods, and for facilitating the export of Vietnam’s Halal products to Brunei as well as their integration into the global Halal supply chain for goods and food products.

The Sultan of Brunei acknowledged the Vietnamese leader’s proposal to enhance cooperation in key areas, particularly in maritime cooperation, by considering the extension of the Memorandum of Understanding on the use of a hotline to support fisheries activities and facilitating licensing for Vietnamese fishing vessels and fishermen to catch seafood in Brunei’s waters.

The two leaders also agreed to strengthen solidarity, unity, and ASEAN’s central role in the region, while promoting cooperation on regional and international issues of shared concern.

The Brunei side affirmed its support for Vietnam in hosting the second ASEAN Future Forum (AFF) in 2025 and chairing APEC in 2027.

Regarding the East Sea issue, both sides emphasized the importance of maintaining peace, stability, security, safety, and freedom of navigation and overflight in the regional waters. They underscored the need to resolve disputes through peaceful means in accordance with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). The leaders agreed to continue close coordination to uphold ASEAN unity, consensus, and the progress ASEAN has achieved in the East Sea issue.

The Sultan of Brunei expressed his anticipation for an upcoming visit to Vietnam and extended an invitation to the Vietnamese President to visit Brunei soon.
