"We aim to boost trade and investments in the Philippines through increased collaboration with the government, private sector and media that are key in driving the country's economic growth," BritCham Executive Director Chris Nelson said in a luncheon with reporters on Thursday.
Nelson is upbeat on the plan to extend Executive Order 10, which reduces the tariffs on rice, pork and corn, and also to the passage of the Anti-Agricultural Smuggling Act.
"We want to see the extension of those lowered tariffs, and we have seen substantial growth in British pork, which also helps the Philippines. With inflation, we strongly support that view," he said.
The Philippines is the second-largest UK pork export market next to China.
Nelson also emphasized that the Anti-Agricultural Smuggling Act and the extension of the lowered tariffs will significantly improve the country's economic growth and competitiveness.
He also mentioned the continuous promotion of digitalization, which will help improve the ease of doing business in the country.
Nelson added that it will help increase interest from UK small and medium enterprises engaged in different sectors to invest in the Philippines.
"British Chamber supports the government's priority on digitalizing the economy while safeguarding privacy to enhance data protection and cybersecurity," Nelson said.
This was echoed by British Ambassador to the Philippines Laure Beaufils, who said that "the relationship [of the UK and the Philippines] around exports is growing which demonstrates robust and science-driven practices and preventive control measures in the agricultural sector."
Beaufils added "the Philippines is reassured in the UK's capability and leadership in maintaining confidence and trust in exports and imports along with the Philippine agricultural authorities through reduced tariff, food security and attaining a competitive market."
