Thailand's durian exports hit record high thanks to faster route to China

26 tháng 06. 2023

Thailand has exported over 0.47 million tons of fresh durian in the first five months of this year, thanks to its continuing popularity among the Chinese and a faster route to China, a Thai government official said Thursday.

More than 150,000 Thai durians so far have been transported to China through the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor, which shortens the journey to only 4 days from 8-10 days on previous sea-road routes, said Anucha Burapachaisri, deputy secretary-general to the prime minister and government spokesman, in a statement.

This fresh transport option not only lowers costs for Thai fruits but also helps reduce damage during transportation, he added.

According to Anucha, the Southeast Asian country exported fresh durians worth over 110 billion baht (about 3.13 billion U.S. dollars) in 2022, the highest durian export value in 30 years, owing to the ease of transportation, China's optimization of its COVID-19 response, the superior taste of Thai durians, and strict quality control measures.

The Thai government urges relevant agencies to put emphasis on durian quality standards from source to destination, he said.

According to data from Thailand's Ministry of Commerce, China was the largest export market for Thai durians last year, accounting for more than 96 percent of the total export volume.

Thailand was the top fruit exporter to China in 2022, generating over 4.9 billion dollars, with a 3.72 percent growth over the previous year, Anucha said in a separate statement.
