Indonesia plans to change the source of some of its fuel imports from Singapore to the United States as part of negotiations over steep tariffs, its energy minister said on Friday.
The United States (US) insisted on bilateral discussions with Asean's individual member states and refused to negotiate with it as a regional bloc on the recent reciprocal tariff move, said the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI).
Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his Singaporean counterpart Lawrence Wong reaffirmed their commitment to deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries, during their phone conversation on May 8.
The statement of the ASEAN+3 countries also reaffirmed their commitment to a rules-based, free, fair and transparent multilateral trading system.
He said the negotiations will be held virtually, led by Deputy Secretary-General (trade) MITI, Mastura Ahmad Mustafa as Malaysia’s chief negotiator, alongside the Assistant US Trade Representative for Southeast Asia and the Pacific, Sarah Ellerman.
With some G7 countries cutting interest rates, the US is likely to relook at its tariffs in the coming days. Going by the trend, there is growing optimism about a potential rebound in global demand, an indication that could support Cambodia’s export outlook.
CCC vice-president Sok Piseth, who also serves as chairman of the ASEAN Business Advisory Council for Cambodia, explained that the meeting aimed to strengthen ties between the two institutions and identify key sectors for future collaboration.
Several Thai products, including pet food and rice, are poised to gain a larger market share in America amid escalating US-China trade tensions, according to the Thai Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO).
