Cambodia develop strategy to take advantage of free trade agreement with China, Korea

The Ministry of Commerce has set up a working group to study and collect input from stakeholders and the private sector to develop strategies to maximize the implementation of the Free Trade Agreement, of which Cambodia is a signatory. This was said by Pan Sorasak, Minister of Commerce.

Sorasak confirmed that Cambodia has successfully completed the negotiation of the first bilateral free trade agreement, the Cambodia-China Free Trade Agreement, on October 12, 2020, and most recently on October 26, signed the Cambodia-Korea Free Trade Agreement.

Cambodia intends to continue to negotiate the establishment of bilateral free trade agreements with other countries such as the European Economic Union, Asia, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan, Mongolia and India.

According to the Minister of Commerce, the working group has compiled a preliminary report on the strategy to maximise the benefits of the implementation of the free trade agreement for the following main purposes: 1) Study and understand the influential factors to strengthen the capacity of relevant sectors to extract benefits from the implementation of the Free Trade Agreement to which Cambodia is a signatory; 2) Factors related to export promotion through analysis of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats on potential products 3) Identify challenges and set out measures and actions to be implemented by relevant ministries and institutions. 4) Disseminate to the public, business, investors and related parties to effectively implement the terms of the free trade agreement.

Based on this study, the team identified 10 potential commodities to boost production and export: rice – cassava, banana, longan, mango, cashew, meat, rubber, pineapple and pepper.
