The newly-appointed Singapore Ambassador to Cambodia Teo Lay Cheng presented her credentials to His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni at the Royal Palace on February 24.
During the Royal Audience, Ambassador Teo highlighted the excellent and multi-faceted relationship between Singapore and Cambodia in areas such as trade, investment and technical cooperation.
Singapore is one of Cambodia’s largest trade and investment partners.
Some 15,800 Cambodian officials have been trained under the Singapore Cooperation Programme (SCP), including more than 10,000 under the Initiative for ASEAN Integration (IAI).
The SCP was established in 1992 to serve as the primary platform through which Singapore offers technical assistance to other countries.
In 2018, the training centre in Phnom Penh was upgraded to a Cambodia-Singapore Cooperation Centre to better meet Cambodia’s evolving needs.
The IAI was established in 2000 to narrow the development divide in Asean and enhance the bloc’s competitiveness as a region.
Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a press release on November 24 that Ambassador Teo had been named as the Rebublic’s envoy to Cambodia and was to assume the post on January 4, 2021.
She last served as Director of Strategic Communications at the ministry from 2017 to last year.
Ambassador Teo has also held other appointments at the Ministry’s headquarters, covering Southeast Asia, Public Affairs, and Asean. From 2009 to 2013, she was part of the pioneer team at the Singapore Permanent Mission to ASEAN in Jakarta, serving as Deputy Permanent Representative. Prior to that, she was at the Singapore Embassy in Bangkok, completing her tour of duty as Deputy Chief of Mission.
Ambassador Teo graduated with a Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) from the National University of Singapore. She was awarded the Public Administration Medal (Bronze) in 2009.
