Foreign minister says the natural resources and environmental sustainability ministry will submit an official letter to the Asean Secretariat in due course.
The transboundary haze affecting Malaysia and other parts of the region is best solved using Asean diplomatic channels, says foreign minister Mohamad Hasan.
He said Asean remains the most appropriate platform for addressing issues involving countries in the region, Bernama reported.
He added that the natural resources and environmental sustainability (NRES) ministry, would submit an official letter to the Asean Secretariat in due course.
“NRES minister Arthur Joseph Kurup will also write to his counterpart in Indonesia.
“We believe Asean is the best mechanism for addressing issues and problems among Asean member states, and we view it as more effective for the secretariat to manage this matter,” he told reporters in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei today.
Mohamad is currently on a three-day working visit to Brunei, which began yesterday.
Yesterday, Malaysian high commissioner to Brunei, Aini Atan said the haze affecting several areas in the region was expected to be among the issues discussed by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and the Sultan of Brunei, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, during the 27th Malaysia-Brunei Annual Leaders’ Consultation today.
He said the issue was currently of mutual concern to both countries.
Meanwhile, 10 monitoring stations in Sarawak have once again reached unhealthy levels as of 8am today.
Air Pollutant Index (API) readings showed Serian had reverted to an unhealthy API reading of 190, Borneo Post reported.
Other monitoring stations registering unhealthy levels include Kuching (181), Samarahan (177), Sri Aman (174), Sarikei (172), Sibu (160), Bintulu (157), 156 each in Mukah and Samalaju, and 152 in Miri.
Monitoring stations at ILP Miri and Limbang registered API readings of 89 and 77 respectively.
