Indonesia is negotiating with India, Bangladesh and several other Asian countries on potential urea fertiliser exports to secure stocks amid global supply chain disruptions.
According to PT Pupuk Indonesia President Director Rahmad Pribadi, the discussions follow the country's fertiliser exports to Australia under a government-to-government (G-to-G) cooperation framework.
He noted that Indonesia’s export expansion comes after the government decided to allocate surplus fertiliser output to overseas markets while continuing to prioritise domestic demand.
Rahmad said Indonesia’s fertiliser production capacity currently exceeds local requirements. The country has an annual fertiliser production capacity of around 14.8 million tonnes, including 9.4 million tonnes of urea. After meeting domestic demand, Indonesia is estimated to have an exportable surplus of between 1.5 million and 2 million tonnes each year.
Export plans will also be adjusted according to the planting seasons of destination markets. Australia has become an immediate focus as it is currently entering a planting period, while South Asian countries could become key destinations later in the year as their agricultural seasons begin.
Indonesia and Australia have already agreed on the supply of 250,000 tonnes of fertiliser./.
