Khmer New Year surge signals economic strength

22 tháng 04. 2026

The Royal Government of Cambodia has hailed the surge in tourism during the recent Khmer New Year as a definitive indicator of the nation’s socio-economic vitality and underlying economic resilience.

Government spokesman Pen Bona said during a press briefing yesterday that the high mobility of travellers and widespread public celebrations reflect a stable, thriving society.

He emphasised that this festive success was underpinned by strategic government interventions to protect citizens’ livelihoods. Key measures included the effective management of fuel prices and the provision of free public transport, which significantly eased the financial burden on families during the holiday period.

“Maintaining socio-economic normality amid challenging global conditions is no coincidence,” Bona remarked at the Office of the Council of Ministers in Phnom Penh. “It is the direct result of the government’s visionary leadership and meticulous strategic planning.”

Following the festivities, Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed his gratitude to provincial authorities and national working groups for ensuring the safety and enjoyment of citizens and international visitors alike. The Prime Minister noted that the “Nokor Sankranta” events in the capital and various provincial celebrations were curated to promote Khmer cultural identity and foster a spirit of national unity.

He also paid tribute to the “frontline” forces, expressing his appreciation for the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces stationed across the country for their unwavering commitment to national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In his closing remarks, Bona reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to a comprehensive development strategy. This approach integrates international diplomacy, economic growth, and social welfare, ensuring that the protection of the Cambodian people and their territory remains the state’s highest priority.
