Amru Rice has signed a new agreement to export around 400 metric tonnes of premium fragrant jasmine rice to The Green Group, one of Australia’s largest and most established food wholesalers.
The agreement, which runs from January to June 2026, is expected to pave the way for long-term contracts that will bring Cambodian rice to major Australian supermarkets.
Australian Ambassador to Cambodia, Derek Yip, joined Amru Rice Co-founder and CEO Oknha Song Saran at the company’s processing factory in Phnom Penh to send off two containers of premium Cambodian rice to Australia under the new deal.
Australian support played a key role in facilitating the agreement. Through targeted initiatives funded by Australia to expand exports of value-added Cambodian agri-food products, Amru Rice participated in a trade promotion visit to Australia in 2023 and has since received continued assistance through Australia’s Cambodia Australia Partnership for Resilient Economic Development (CAPRED) programme, which helped establish the commercial relationships behind the deal.
Ambassador Yip said, “I congratulate Amru Rice on securing this long-term partnership. This deal reflects the deepening trade relationship between Australia and Cambodia, delivering benefits for both our countries. It provides Australian consumers more choices with high-quality Cambodian products finding a place on Australian supermarket shelves. We are helping Cambodian exporters access premium markets and driving strong and inclusive economic growth in Cambodia.”
Saran said, “This partnership with Green Group marks an important milestone in Amru Rice’s expansion into the Australian market. We are proud to supply premium Cambodian fragrant jasmine rice that meets international standards and reflects our commitment to sustainable farming and value-added processing.”
The deal builds on growing trade between Australia and Cambodia, which reached $1.2 billion in 2025, including around $850 million in Cambodian exports to Australia.
In 2025, Cambodia exported a record 940,000 metric tonnes of milled rice, generating $602 million in revenue. Meanwhile, the Australian rice market is projected to grow from $5.7 billion in 2024 to $7.1 billion by 2033, driven by rising demand for premium, organic and specialty rice varieties — sectors where Cambodian producers such as Amru Rice are well positioned.
The Green Group visited Cambodia in 2024 and later signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Amru Rice in February 2025 to commercialise Cambodian agri-food products, including rice. The signing ceremony in Sydney was presided over by Cham Nimul, Minister of Commerce.
Nelson Green, Managing Director of The Green Group, said, “To be successful in taking a food product to any market you need the exporter and importer to be working as a team. The relationship between Amru Rice and The Green Group is an example of this. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Australian Ambassador for his constant support and interest in this project.”
Australia has supported Cambodia’s rice sector for more than 30 years, including through research on high-yield and climate-resilient rice varieties and improved access to agricultural technologies and inputs.
The partnership continues today with a focus on strengthening domestic processing capacity, expanding export markets and promoting sustainable agricultural production practices.
