Cambodia and Singapore have pledged to boost annual trade volume to $10 billion, from about $1.4 billion last year.
The 2025 figure was up 56 percent on the previous year, making Singapore Cambodia’s sixth-largest trading partner.
Senate President Hun Sen and Teo Lay Cheng, Singapore’s outgoing ambassador to Cambodia, made the vow during the farewell meeting on March 4.
Hun Sen commended the improving relationship between the countries, particularly through the constructive role of Teo Lay Cheng’s leadership during the mission in Cambodia.
Likewise, the ambassador noted the relations being deepened in the past years, especially in trade and politics, according to Chea Thyrith, spokesperson for the Senate President.
Hun Sen expressed his hope that both countries could further the trade volume to $10 billion in the upcoming years.
He said political, diplomatic, trade, economic and investment relations are essential in bolstering the partnership.
During her meeting with Prime Minister Hun Manet on March 2, the ambassador said she had witnessed development in Cambodia in several phases since the COVID-19 pandemic to the hosting of ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings in 2022, the 32nd SEA Games and 12th ASEAN Para Games in 2023.
She trusted that the relationship will be further deepened. In response, Hun Manet raised several potential sectors, including economic, trade and investment, education and vocational training.
The increase in trade with Singapore was due to the rise in Cambodia’s imports from Singapore at $1.3 billion last year, up 68 percent, while exports were down 36.9 percent to $65 million.
