The Myanmar Swiftlet Nest Farming Association will be launched to export swiftlet bird nest products, which are found only in seven Southeast Asian countries, including Myanmar.
The Myanmar Swiftlet Nest Farming Association was temporarily established in 2023. Currently, the association has formed a working group to organize and establish a sister organization with the Myanmar Livestock Federation (MLF). Discussions are underway to export edible bird nest products as the number of bird breeders and edible organic bird nest producers increases.
Swiftlet bird nest products are found only in seven Southeast Asian countries, including Myanmar. The association will promote the swiftlet breeding industry in Myanmar and facilitate knowledge sharing within the sector.
Swiftlet bird breeding was previously concentrated mainly in Myeik and Kawthoung in the Taninthayi Region. However, it is now also being practised in the Yangon, Bago, and Ayeyawady Regions, as well as in Rakhine State.
In South-East Asia – primarily Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Viet Nam, Cambodia, and Myanmar – bird nests occur naturally. Typically, swiftlet birds build their nests in rocky caverns. Bird nests are a high-value product and are exported overseas from Myanmar’s coastal regions, such as the Myeik Archipelago. In recent years, edible bird nest production has increased, and nests are now being produced through home-based systems in addition to natural caves.
