Trenggono confirmed that the ministry is intensifying coordination and negotiations with the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) to ensure the continuation of shrimp exports, which he assured are safe and well-regulated.
Indonesian Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono has assured that the country’s marine product exports to the US, including shrimp, are safe from radiation contamination, specifically from the Radionuclide Cesium-137 (Cs-137).
As reported by the Indonesian news agency Antara, talking with the press on the sidelines of the Indonesia International Sustainability Forum (IISF) 2025, Trenggono confirmed that the ministry is intensifying coordination and negotiations with the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) to ensure the continuation of shrimp exports, which he assured are safe and well-regulated.
The ministry and USFDA have agreed to draft a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on shrimp product safety certification. The USFDA has previously emphasised that the US market remains open to Indonesian shrimp products, provided they meet food safety standards.
Trenggono also clarified that the radiation concerns would not impact future trade tariff negotiations with the US.
The US is one of Indonesia’s largest seafood export markets. Shrimp is the country’s key export item, making a significant contribution to the foreign trade revenue of the Southeast Asian nation./.
