Thailand will accelerate negotiations to finalise the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA) by the end of 2025, in a bid to promote ASEAN as a digital hub in the Asia-Pacific region.

Thai Commerce Minister Pichai Naripthaphan, who chairs the ASEAN-DEFA Committee, said he had proposed Thailand’s readiness to host a Special ASEAN Economic Ministers’ Meeting to Malaysia’s Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Tengku Zafrul Aziz, who currently chairs the ASEAN Economic Ministers (AEM) Council.

The meeting will focus on building regional consensus on the key steps necessary to conclude DEFA within the year, Pichai said.

He also discussed the matter with Singaporean Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong on the sidelines of the 25th ASEAN Economic Community Council meeting in Kuala Lumpur. Singapore has expressed its support and pledged to back Thailand’s push to meet the 2025 target./.
