Against the backdrop of shifting global trade dynamics, the Singapore-Mexico Chamber of Commerce, in collaboration with EY, UPS, and the Embassy of Mexico in Singapore, held a forward-looking seminar addressing the growing relevance of Mexico as a strategic partner for trade and investment.

Held on 28 May 2025, the event brought together business leaders, diplomats, and industry experts for a robust discussion on resilience, nearshoring, and the broader implications of trade reconfiguration amid tariff shifts. It underscored the increasing importance of Mexico not only for its geographical advantage but also for its alignment with key global economic frameworks.

Ambassador Agustín García-López Loaeza opened the seminar by reaffirming the deepening bilateral relationship between Singapore and Mexico, highlighting frameworks such as the Pacific Alliance-Singapore Free Trade Agreement (PASFTA) as catalysts for greater collaboration.

EY’s Luis Coronado and Donald Thomson shared practical tax insights, urging companies to re-evaluate operational policies and prepare for regulatory changes. “Trade rules are evolving quickly—preparedness is essential,” they said, underlining the need for contractual and financial flexibility.

Shiumei Lin, Vice President of Corporate Affairs at UPS Asia Pacific, offered a striking perspective by describing the recently introduced 10% tariffs as “the new 0%”, encouraging businesses to adapt and seek competitive positioning through smart logistics and supply chain strategies.

Industry leaders Joceline Soon, CFO of ENNOVI, and Wiebe Helder, CEO of Cargobase, provided valuable on-the-ground perspectives. They discussed the tangible benefits and logistical realities of operating in Mexico, citing the potential for innovation and long-term growth despite challenges.

Gerson Garduño, CEO of the Singapore-Mexico Chamber of Commerce, closed the event by reaffirming the Chamber’s commitment to supporting businesses in navigating global uncertainties. “Mexico is no longer just an alternative—it’s a cornerstone in global industrial strategy,” he said.

The networking session concluded with an authentic Mexican touch, featuring iconic Jarritos sodas and a curated tequila tasting supported by East West Asia. The event served not only as an exchange of ideas but as a demonstration of the growing cultural and economic ties between both nations.
