Cambodia’s pepper may soon be exported to China

07 tháng 12. 2023

The Cambodian pepper industry is pinning high hopes on exports to the China market as samples of peppercorn have been sent to buyers in the country, said the Cambodian Pepper and Spices Federation (CPSF).

The markets in China, the US and other countries in the Middle East and North Africa are new hopes for local pepper, its president Mak Ny said yesterday.

“CPSF’s members have been in talks with partners in China and some samples of peppercorn have been submitted to the country for quality checks. The federation has high hopes about direct export of the commodity to China soon,” Ny told Khmer Times.

The General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) approved in May this year an export proposal from Cambodia, allowing local pepper to be exported to the Chinese market.

CPSF has recently wrapped up a visit to the US where its members promoted local peppercorns to the customers and buyers there, Ny said, citing that the visit gave high hopes regarding new market access to local commodities.

Cambodia exported 5,805 tonnes of pepper to foreign markets in the January-November period this year, a 30 percent decrease compared to the same period last year, a Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries report showed yesterday.

The Cambodia Pepper and Spices Federation said that the current price of pepper is between $3,000-$3,500 per tonne.

Pepper is grown on 6,935 hectares in Cambodia, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries report.

According to CPSF, the current price of pepper is between $3,000-$3,500 per tonne.

Cambodia exports both Geographical Indication (GI) pepper from Kampot and non-GI pepper, including mixed pepper, good-practice-agriculture pepper and organic pepper. GI pepper is mostly exported to the EU.
