Bringing Vietnam – Indonesia relations into depth, substance and effectiveness

According to Ambassador Ta Van Thong, the strategic partnership between Vietnam and Indonesia has been developing strongly, comprehensively and firmly. In 2018, President Joko Widodo paid a state visit to Vietnam, and Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc also paid a working visit to Indonesia. In 2021, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh made his first foreign trip to Indonesia as Prime Minister. In 2022, the state visit to Indonesia by then President Nguyen Xuan Phuc set a historic milestone when the two countries officially completed negotiations on the delimitation of the exclusive economic zone after 12 years.

The signed action programs have deepened bilateral cooperation in all fields of politics, diplomacy, defense and security, economy, tourism, culture and people-to-people exchanges. The two sides are soon completing the action program for the period 2024 – 2028 for signing as soon as possible. Cooperation mechanisms such as the Foreign Minister’s Bilateral Cooperation Committee and the Joint Committee on Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation are important platforms for implementing specific cooperation contents.

On that positive development momentum, Ambassador Ta Van Thong said that the two countries need to continue to promote cooperation in key areas so that the relationship becomes more and more in-depth, substantive and effective. In terms of politics and security, the two countries should continue to strengthen the exchange of delegations and promote extensive cooperation in the field of defense and security; continue to promote exchanges and contact at all levels and levels; maintain and promote the effectiveness of the existing cooperation mechanism.

In addition, the two sides continue to promote the tradition of close and effective coordination at multilateral organizations and forums, contributing to strengthening ASEAN’s solidarity and central role, maintaining peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region as well as in the world. Vietnam strongly supports Indonesia’s priorities in the role of ASEAN Chair in 2023, believes that under the guidance of Indonesia, ASEAN will fully promote the goals set out in the agenda, towards the role of ASEAN member countries. broader in the Indo-Pacific regional architecture.

In terms of economy, trade and investment, it is necessary to focus on promoting solutions for bilateral trade growth, towards new higher goals for two-way trade. In ASEAN, Indonesia is the largest market with over 285 million consumers, Vietnam is the third largest market with 100 million people and impressive economic growth. The ministries and sectors of the two countries need to study and promote economic cooperation, including balanced trade development, actively taking advantage of the potential for cooperation in new fields, especially together with the energy transition plan. ; negotiating on removing non-trade barriers, removing difficulties and creating more conditions and incentives for businesses of the two sides to best access each other’s markets.

Regarding culture – education, tourism and people-to-people exchanges, the two countries need to strengthen connections and people-to-people exchanges through exchange of art troupes, mass and local associations. The two sides need to increase the number of scholarships for students from both sides to study and practice in each country. In the near future, Indonesia may become one of the chosen destinations of Vietnamese students in Southeast Asia. The tourism potential of each country needs to be exploited more strongly, complementing each other through tourism linkage products, promoting and enhancing understanding of each other’s history, traditions and culture. Along with that, the two sides also need to increase the frequency and consider opening new routes connecting tourist destinations between the two countries. Tourism projects need to take into account that Indonesia is moving its capital and is promoting the development of new tourist attractions.

Assessing the significance of the upcoming visit to Indonesia by National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue, Ambassador Ta Van Thong emphasized that the strategic partnership between Vietnam and Indonesia is built on the foundation of the traditional friendship between Vietnam and Indonesia. two countries, two peoples, nurtured by the leaders of the two countries, President Ho Chi Minh and President Sukarno, and generations of leaders and people of the two countries.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations on December 30, 1955, after nearly 70 years with many ups and downs of history, the traditional friendship and trust between Indonesia and Vietnam has always been maintained. , strengthen and develop. Therefore, the upcoming visit of National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue is of great significance in order to further strengthen the cohesion between the two countries and two peoples in general, as well as promote parliamentary cooperation in particular. This is also the first visit of the head of the National Assembly of Vietnam to Indonesia since the visit of then President of the National Assembly Nguyen Phu Trong in March 2010.

Overall, the Vietnam – Indonesia relationship has developed from a foundation of friendship and trust to a strategic partnership, covering all areas of cooperation and a future-oriented relationship. more and more deeply, substantively, effectively, practically serving the interests of the two peoples and contributing to peace, stability and prosperity of the region as well as the world.

Economic and trade cooperation has made great progress. Trade turnover between the two countries also recorded positive growth. In Southeast Asia, Indonesia is currently Vietnam’s third largest trading partner, while Vietnam is Indonesia’s fourth largest trading partner in Southeast Asia. In 2013, bilateral trade turnover only reached 4.8 billion USD, so far the turnover has increased nearly 3 times, reaching 14.1 billion USD in 2022. In the first 4 months of 2023 alone, bilateral trade turnover has increased by nearly 3 times, reaching 14.1 billion USD in 2022. bilateral trade has reached more than 4.2 billion USD, of which exports to Indonesia reached 1.6 billion USD, up 9% over the same period in 2022. It is expected that in 2023, the bilateral trade turnover between Vietnam and Indonesia will have can reach or exceed 15 billion USD, soon achieve the target set by the two countries’ senior leaders.

Defense and security relations have also been promoted, notably the visits of the Indonesian Defense Minister (May 2022), the visits to Indonesia by the Chief of the General Staff of Vietnam, the Navy Commanders, the General Director General Department II (June 2023), exchange activities, visits and training of the two navies.
